This stone memorial plaque has been placed next to the former site of the synagogue since 1984. "After the synagogue on the market square in Winnweiler, which had existed since 1819/20, had to be closed in 1899 due to dilapidation, the Jewish community built a very attractive new synagogue in the Neo-Romanesque style in 1900/1901 "Im Stockborn" (later Synagogengasse, then Realschulstraße and today Gymnasiumstraße). The foundation stone was laid on August 25, 1900. On June 28, 1901, the synagogue was consecrated with great participation from the Winnweiler population, the municipal council, and the two Christian congregations. The designer was the well-known Jewish architect Prof. Ludwig Levi from Landau/Karlsruhe, who designed numerous synagogues (e.g., in Kaiserslautern, Strasbourg, Baden-Baden, Bingen, and others). He also planned a series of Christian churches in the West Palatinate. The main hall had 44 seats for men, and the women's gallery had 30 seats for women. The synagogue was burned down by an SA troop during Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) on November 9/10, 1938, and the remains were blown up the following year. These days, there is easy parking on the castle square (or at the train station). To the right of the municipal library, in the northern corner of the castle square, stands "a faithful replica of the castle's foundation stone, preserved inside the [former castle]." "This is where the castle of the Counts of Falkenstein, built in 1604, stood. In the late 17th and 18th centuries, it housed the Oberamt (superintendent's office) of the County of Falkenstein, initially under the Lorraine and later under the Habsburg-Lorraine regime. During the French period - at the beginning of the 19th century - the castle, which was then undamaged, was auctioned off for demolition." This museum focuses on the Jewish history of Winnweiler and the Northern Palatinate, as well as Jewish culture in general (including a large original goatskin Torah!). You can also learn about local and regional history here, including a dedicated Gienanth section (Gienanth = a formerly very important mining company in this region). There is also a small collection of paintings by the Northern Palatinate painter Ludwig Götz (1892–1963). Small old church, directly opposite the Catholic church of St. James the Elder. You can find out more about the church on the Lohnsfeld website (lohnsfeld.de/index.php/32-kultur-und-geschichte/geschichte/kirchengeschichte/132-protestantische-kirchengeschichte) and it has also had a small appearance on SWR television: swrfernsehen.de/landesschau-rp/hierzuland/kaiserstrasse-lohnsfeld-100.html
