Man oh man, nuclear missiles were stationed very close to us from 1984 onwards in the forest near Königsbrück and near Uhyst. It's just a good thing that Gorbachev was there at the time and, with prudence and understanding, made the first real disarmament of the Cold War possible just three years later. Without him, today's united Germany would certainly not exist.

Landmark in the Königsbrücker Heide and certainly great for marveling at the surrounding landscape :-)

Worth seeing legacy from days gone by.

It's hard to imagine what it was like here just over 30 years ago. But the legacies here and elsewhere in the Königsbrücker Heide give a little idea of the time back then.

Oh well. A tower in the forest to see the forest from above.

Here in these waters the beaver has found a new home again.

The bunker belonged to the Red Army's nuclear bunker guard on the Königsbrücker Heide.

The area of the Königsbrücker Heide is an FFH area and an EU bird sanctuary. When the area was set up as a military training area after World War II, the cultural landscape was largely destroyed. After the reunification, the diverse flora and fauna can gradually develop again in the area.
