The White Tower was built between 1078 and 1100 by William the Conqueror to impress, subdue, and terrify Londoners, as well as deter foreign invaders. Along with the entire Tower Fortress, the White Tower is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Grade II listed building. The Changing of the Guard begins with the Windsor Castle guards lining up outside the Guard Room. The Windsor Castle guard is normally provided by one of the five regiments of the Foot Guards of the Household Division, dressed in their uniforms of red tunics and bearskins. At the appropriate time, the new guard will arrive, led by a regimental band, a drum corps, or occasionally a pipe band. During the 45-minute ceremony, the handover of duties takes place, including the changing of sentries. Following the ceremony, the Old Guard will return to Victoria Barracks, Windsor. When the King is at his official residence, the parade takes place in the castle square near the entrance to the State Rooms.

Like Westminster Abbey, St. George's Chapel is a royal mausoleum. Notables buried there include Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, as well as George V and Queen Mary. St. George's Chapel is a working chapel, with services held daily. Although the chapel is closed to visitors on Sundays, services are held there. The origins of Windsor Castle date back to William the Conqueror, who built a stockade mound around 1070. Work was continued by Henry II, who constructed a round stone tower and three outer walls. Henry III built the western end of the lower court with a chapel on the site of the present Albert Memorial Chapel. In 1348, the chapel was used by Edward IV for the ceremony of the investiture of the Order of the Garter.

This ceremony is accompanied by bands and follows a set protocol. The guards themselves are often members of the Foot Guards, one of the five regiments of the British Army known for their striking red uniforms and tall bearskin hats.
