At this time of year, due to the heavy vegetation, very few of the ruins are visible.

The monument commemorates the apparition of Saint Matthias. Following the apparition, the Schwarzenbroich Monastery was built by Werner von Merode. The monastery was abandoned during the Napoleonic occupation of the Rhineland. Parts of the former monastery have been reused in the old Langerwehe parish church.

The memorial stone of the Heimbach pilgrims stands at the height of the Schlich sports field in the forest.
