The Hoogen Steener are among the tombs located along the "Road of Megalithic Culture." For more information about this, or just to get some insight, visit strassedermegalithkultur.de. The tourist information office in Werlte also has an information flyer with a map of many of the stone tombs. Finds from this period can be seen in Oldenburg at the "Nature and Man" Museum on the dam (naturundmensch.de), which regularly hosts special exhibitions, or at the Emsland Archaeology Museum (archaeologie-emsland.de) in Meppen.

The tower can be reached via the main path. The path is secured with a barrier at the front. A narrow path leads past the barrier on the right. I think it was deliberately chosen to be so narrow. After that you have to drive about 500 m along a dirt road. When you get there and take a break, take the rubbish with you. Those who want to "litter or smear everything around" should do so within your own four walls - if you have any. Intelligence comes from understanding ... The observation tower in the Leegmoor nature reserve provides impressive insights into the bird life of the European protected area. In addition, there are areas with a fairly well-developed meadow bird population as well as open water areas with resting birds all year round and the extensive moor, pasture and meadow landscape. Thanks to the relatively good access, this natural experience can be admired all year round. https://surwold.de/aussichtsturm-im-leegmoor/

The large stone grave is located northwest of Werpeloh in the forest. From the road leading north out of Werpeloh, a road branches off to the northwest into the forest area. You can park at a barrier and a sign pointing to a shooting range and continue into the forest. After about 250 meters, turn right to the Werpeloh 2 grave. After about 250 meters, this path gets lost in the forest and a trail leads about 100 meters to the left to the stone grave

It always makes me awestruck when you see these huge stones 🪨. How were these stones moved over 5000 years ago?

With a length of 29 m and 15 bays, the chamber is considered one of the longest stone tombs in Northern Europe. The state of preservation of the chamber is also great. Most of the 14 capstones are still intact. The entrance on the south side is also easy to locate. On the other hand, only a few stones give a vague idea of the former enclosure. About 150 pieces of sherds were found during excavations, which belong to at least 20 vessels of the funnel beaker culture of the younger Neolithic. Like the flint tools that were also discovered, they are in the State Museum in Hanover. "De hoogen Steener" can be reached from Werlte via the Rastdorfer Straße (K146) towards Rastdorf or the Loruper Straße (L30) towards Lorup. There is parking directly at the burial mound. These megalithic tombs are part of the Route of Megalithic Culture (SMK). See also Station 20b: Polden Hünensteine
