The Kellerberge Nature Heritage Area (DBU) is a 284-hectare protected area northeast of Gardelegen. Since 2012, it has been part of the National Natural Heritage and is managed by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt). The area encompasses various habitats such as sandy grasslands, heathlands, and mixed forests with oak, birch, aspen, and pine, providing habitat for numerous animal and plant species. The history of the Kellerberge is shaped by over 300 years of military use. Military exercises were held here as early as the 18th century, an air base was later built, and until 1994, the Soviet Army used the area as a military training ground. Due to possible remnants of war, access is only permitted in designated areas. To promote biodiversity, grazing projects with sheep and goats are used to preserve open landscapes and protect habitats for rare bird species such as the hoopoe, the skylark, and the red-backed shrike.
