Large, quiet Old Rhine waters.

The Old Airfield is a largely flat sandy area with nutrient-poor soil, atypical for the region. This has created a habitat that is virtually unique in the northern Upper Rhine Plain. Over 80 bird species, 100 moth species, and 280 different flowering plant species have been identified to date. It has been designated a nature reserve since 2010. There is a surrounding path that offers views over the old airfield and into the distance beyond.

There is a lot to discover in the nature reserve. There are also 2 observation huts

The Old Airfield is a nature reserve in the Hardtebenen natural area in Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg. It was not only after the end of the use of the United States Armed Forces as a military airfield that valuable sand and poor grasslands were able to develop in the area.

Nature reserve and tranquility in one, with the observation posts you can also observe some animals.

I think the southern viewing point is the most beautiful for a view of the former gravel pit lake and current Kohlplattenschlag bird sanctuary. There are three of these viewing huts in total at Kohlplattenschlag.
