This 25-meter-high lighthouse (115 steps to climb) was built at the end of the world in the 13th century, on the site of a fire that had been continuously maintained since the 5th century to guide boats. Below, foaming waves crash against the black schist rocks, swept along by strong winds.

This Cistercian abbey, situated in a valley northeast of the peninsula, was founded in 1200 by the Norman William de Clare. During his first voyage to Ireland, he was caught in a storm and vowed to found an abbey if he survived. Monks inhabited the site until the 16th century, after which the abbey was owned by the Colclough family for almost 400 years. The complex, which offers a highly photogenic view from the fortified bridge, has preserved magnificent remains, including an imposing battlemented tower.

Winter break until March – we hadn't been informed of that. The large parking lot was also locked up. Since it was empty enough in the stormy December weather, we were able to pull over and walk along the road for a bit. On this clear winter day, it was an incredible experience; the spray was flying onto the road.

Open from mid-March to early November; the prices Birgit mentioned are still current. We were there in December. You can still walk around the ruins and get a good impression.

Dublin Bay is a stunning natural inlet along Ireland's east coast, framing the city of Dublin with its sweeping views and rich biodiversity. It stretches from Howth Head in the north to Dalkey in the south, featuring sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and vibrant wildlife. The bay is home to Bull Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and offers recreational activities like walking, cycling, swimming, and sailing.

The Custom House is an iconic neoclassical building overlooking the River Liffey. Designed by James Gandon and completed in 1791, it served as a symbol of British governance in Ireland before transitioning to a government office for independent Ireland. Its striking façade features intricate sculptures representing rivers of Ireland and other symbolic figures. A key historical site, the building was partially destroyed during the War of Independence and later restored. Today, it remains a prominent landmark, admired for its architectural grandeur and historical significance.

In Mullingar the Old Railway Track and the Royal Canal Way can be seen, two very nice Greenways connecting West and East Ireland through the beautiful Irish Midlands.
