A particular highlight on our walk was the baptismal font (Frauenstein). The striking dolerite rock lies exposed in the landscape and has a natural depression where rainwater collects – a shape reminiscent of a baptismal font, which gave the place its name.

The baptismal font is a great place with history. It is beautifully situated in the forest and is very well maintained. There are very good information boards that provide information about the history of the place. But the place is also very suitable for just taking a contemplative break. Research by the nature and monument protection authorities of the Fulda and Main-Kinzig districts has not revealed the slightest indication that the so-called "Saint Kilian", the "Apostle of the Franks", was ever in this region, let alone even remotely near this pre-Christian burial and cult site. As early as the 19th century, at the time when the monolith was renamed from Frauenstein to baptismal font by church fanatics because of its natural depression, scientists and local researchers doubted any connection to "St. Kilian". Nevertheless, the myth of the early Christian baptismal font persists among the Catholic population to this day. Just a few years ago, a fanatical priest (the same one who is now on trial for pedophilia) illegally erected a large wooden cross right next to the Frauenstein, which had to be removed again according to the order of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. Unfortunately, not far from the stone, another cross was erected without permission.

Lots of birds and quiet environment

The interesting baptismal font is located on the Frauenstein - a boulder with a depression in the middle and thus somewhat reminiscent of a baptismal font. At 595.6 meters above sea level, the Frauenstein is the highest point on the Hessian ridge.
