The Nordoe Inland Dunes are now a 407-hectare nature reserve and part of the National Natural Heritage. The area is characterized by a mix of diverse habitats: open sandy areas, heathlands, and wetlands. There are both pine-covered inland dunes and scrub-like oak woodlands. The Nordoe Inland Dunes are an important refuge for rare and endangered animal and plant species. The ecosystem depends on the nutrient-poor conditions and open landscape. To maintain these conditions, the area is now managed through extensive grazing with Galloways, Highland cattle, and Exmoor ponies.

A bathing lake with several bays and small beaches. Benches invite you to a picnic. Rubbish bin and emergency telephone available. Dogs are not allowed in the lake.

The inland dunes of Nordoe are quite a sight to behold. Despite the poor soil, many insects find a home here. A plaque not far from the dunes tells you more about it.

Since March 2013, the former Bundeswehr training area in Nordoe and immediately adjacent areas in the area of the municipalities of Dägeling, Kremperheide and Breitenburg have been a 407 large nature reserve.
