A magnificent landscape. The dunes provide so much beautiful habitat for flora and fauna, which we can explore. Numerous signs explain this protected natural area.

The straightening of the Rhine by the Baden engineer Tulla shortened the shipping route between Basel and Worms by 81 km and better protected the region from flooding. However, this shifted the flood risk downstream of the Rhine and affected biodiversity.

The dune path is at least partially close to a newly established military restricted area. Please do not leave the signposted areas and paths. The German army regularly checks to ensure compliance. Nevertheless, the dune path is a great experience, especially recommended in dry weather.

In Central Europe, inland dunes and drifting sand fields are spatially separated from the coastal dunes on the North and Baltic Sea coasts. These are aeolian formations made of sand, i.e. H. they were originally created by the wind. They were mostly blown up under cold-climatic, periglacial conditions at the end of the Weichselian or Würm Ice Age, a little more than 10,000 years ago. Their development in the post-glacial period is largely due to human influence.

Beautiful information boards and some rest benches along the paths make the walk here even more pleasant.

Wonderful hiking area. Magnificent nature and after heavy rain some paths are very slippery or impassable due to flooding.
