According to legend, the shallow cave in the rock (quartz-armed porphyry or rhyolite) was once much larger, and three fairies lived there. On a full moon night, a minstrel who had previously played at the fair in Hintergersdorf (spa town of Hartha) passed by. The three fairies had laid out laundry on the meadow to bleach. The musician picked up a lace cloth and took it with him. However, when he got home, instead of the cloth, he held a gray cobweb in his hand. Before sunrise, he returned the cobweb to its place, where it became a lace cloth again, just as the other laundry disappeared with the first rays of sunlight. Since then, the fairies have not been seen again, and the cave has become a shallow hole.

The Porphyry Fan – A Landmark in "Little Tyrol." An impressive site with information panels and plenty of seating. Info: Impressive rock faces at the "Porphyry Fan" National Geotope. The 40-meter-wide and 15-meter-high porphyry fan was discovered by chance during quarrying operations in the 19th century. Due to the natural significance of the outcrop, quarrying ceased around 1850. It was designated a natural monument in 1958.

Basalt quarry, very impressive, with a rest area and a witch's cottage. Information: In the old quarry (in operation until 1913), basalt is exposed over a length of 80 meters and an average height of 16 meters. The striking formation of the predominantly five- to six-sided columns prompted the Saxon authorities to designate it a natural monument as early as 1939. The quarry, with its small "witch's cottage," is a popular destination for day trips.

How powerful! It makes you feel really small as a person. A great highlight for a hike or bike ride. On site there are many information boards, seating, a trash can ( :) ) and even a shelter under which you can take refuge when it rains.

With its special and varied geological features (e.g. with formations and rocks from various geological eras), the Tharandt Forest forms the core of the Geopark Sachsens Mitte. There is now a new, beautifully designed shelter near the fan, ideal for resting & learning about geological events.

Geological exploration and legend station If you hike along the Triebisch through the Tharandter Forest, you will come across not only the small ponds but also a cave on a slope above the Jungfernteich. This was probably created by human hands. The cave consists of low-quartz porphyry. It is located above the biotope ponds on the Triebisch (Triebisch Lakes). https://www.erzgebirge-tourismus.de/

The geotope "Porphyry Fan" at Schmieders Graben is the center of the Geological Open Air Museum in the Tharandt Forest. An information board from the "Geological Open Air Museum" illustrates the volcanic origin of the rock found here. The 12 most important geotopes are connected along an approximately 12 km long educational and hiking trail, and their origin and connection to the geology of Saxony are shown on boards. Here you have the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the interesting geology of the Tharandt Forest, which covers half a billion years of geological history. Possible starting points are the "Sportplatz Mohorn-Grund" car park or the "Gasthaus zum Landberg Herzogswalde" car park. https://www.erzgebirge-tourismus.de/

This former basalt quarry is beautifully situated in the forest. The rock formations are very fragile and must not be entered or climbed. The area with the Hexenhäusl is a wonderful place to rest, especially on hot summer days.

You are standing here in a volcanic cone that collapsed in prehistoric times. The columnar basalt was mined here until 1913. And the witch's house was - hard to believe - the house of the demolition expert. It was converted into a shelter in 1930/1952.

There are diverse geological formations in the Tharandt Forest, one of which is the basalt quarry. The quarry was in operation until 1913 and has been a natural (area) monument since 1939. The interesting formation was created by the cooling of magma over the course of millions of years
