The grasslands are of great importance as a habitat for various meadow birds. In addition, together with the water areas of Lake Hemmelsdorf, it is important as a resting and wintering area for many bird species.

Since April 2023, the car park at the bird park has been subject to a fee all year round (daily fee in the season 12 euros, slightly less expensive in winter). After all, the pioneer bridge over the Aalbeek (at the lookout tower) should finally be usable again; the closure began in December 2021. There are even plans to upgrade the hiking trails. In the spring these were partly impassable because of the water levels.
