The over 100-year-old and 30 to 40-meter-deep marl pit has been dormant for almost 50 years. Poplars that had been reforested in the meantime were removed, and a viewing platform was added to the site for visitors. A pump prevents the pit from flooding, allowing the flora and fauna typical of the former Seckbruch landscape northeast of Hanover to flourish at the pit floor. Due to the marl's elevated salinity, coastal species also occur. A lovely destination, with two sandy beaches for swimming and restaurants. We were there in September 2024 and saw (and smelled) some people barbecuing with their own small grills.
