Around the entire Garzweiler opencast mine, several steel pillars mark the route of the future cycle path, which will eventually connect the mine and the resulting lake. The pillars are being erected by the LANDFOLGE Garzweiler special purpose association with the support of RWE. This association is responsible for implementing projects planned for the immediate vicinity of the Garzweiler opencast mine, primarily for planning the use of the future lake and its shores. The path around the opencast mine will be approximately 23 kilometers long in total. What's special about the pillars: They come from RWE's workshop for large equipment and excavators. They are stamping residues for spare parts.

The former lignite mining areas in the Rhineland have not been repopulated and therefore now create a spaceless expanse in this densely populated area. However, the landscape design is largely unimaginative (few trees, huge fields, dead straight paths). The Dutch have redesigned the former industrial area between Maastricht and Roermond along the Meuse in a much nicer way.
