Hard ride, worth the effort, pretty steep at the start of the decent into Nelson, but quickly levels out to a brilliant decent.

It is probably an OK alternative to the Highway from Pelorious Bridge to Nelson. The Nelson Side is way steeper. No matter which direction you go and no matter how little lugage you take, you will probably need to push your bike in some parts up the hill and eventually even down the hill.

If you've made it this far (either from Hilo or Kailua Kona) head up Mauna Kea here. The road is paved up to the visitor center. There are also supply options there. The ride up to the Access Rd from Hilo is a steady 6%, up to 2000 meters. It’s not hard just boring. The road is wide so can sometimes be disorienting as to if you’re going up or down. Trust me you’re going up. The hard shoulder is smooth, wide, away from the vehicles, with some stones etc but easy to dodge.

A must for touring cyclists on the South Island. The ascent is rewarded with a wonderful view.

Nice viewpoint. As it is easy to reach by car a good starting point for a hike we along the crater rim.
