The Sempt arises near Ottenhofen from the confluence of the Anzinger Sempt and the shorter Forstinninger Sempt. It is heavily fed by groundwater from the gravel plain, so that it is relatively cool in summer, rarely exceeding 17 °C, but it does not freeze in winter.[4] The most important tributary is the Strogen, which flows into Moosburg.
