When Gießeners talk about their “local mountain”, they are talking about Schiffenberg, which is about five kilometers south of the city center. The approximately 280 meter high mountain and the monastery there, which was secularized in 1809, have long been a popular local recreation area and destination. Augustinian canons lived here from the first third of the 12th century and then from 1323 members of the Teutonic Order.
