Cheated using the eeb ,but top day out 👌

Be prepared for a good hour's hike-a-bike over football-sized gravel, with parts submerged under deep pools even on a dry day in July. It's called rough stuff for a reason :)

Horseshoe pass (Bwlch yr Oernant) is a 4 mile climb in North Wales near Wrexham, averaging 5% – climbing 311 metres to finish at 1,200 ft (404m).  It’s a challenging hill climb, with a few steeper sections of up to 12%, but generally, it feels quite a steady gradient. On a good day, it provides a beautiful backdrop for a hill climb. The Horseshoe Pass is a mountain pass in Denbighshire, north-east Wales. It separates Llantysilio Mountain to the west from the 565 metre mountain and Marilyn Cyrn-y-Brain to the east. The A542 road from Llandegla to Llangollen runs through the pass, reaching a maximum height of 417 metres.

The Horseshoe Pass (Welsh: Bwlch yr Oernant, "Pass of the Cold Stream") is a mountain pass in Denbighshire, north-east Wales. It separates Llantysilio Mountain to the west from the 565 metre (1,854 feet) mountain and Marilyn Cyrn-y-Brain to the east. The A542 road from Llandegla to Llangollen runs through the pass, reaching a maximum height of 417 metres (1,368 ft). The road travels in a horseshoe shape around the sides of a valley, giving the pass its English name. In 2022, a proposal for a 40 mph speed limit on the Horseshoe Pass was approved after a lengthy campaign by Llangollen's county councillors.

This spot is the best lookout point on the horseshoe pass, just before getting to the cafe at the top. An easy place to stop off the road and take a few pictures.

A great cycling destination and challenge, a rewarding 6k climb and the best views. Even better on dissent, with wide and well paved roads it's easy to reach speeds of up to 40 mph (64 kph) or more!

Wayfarer Over The Top (and down the other side) off road section

Following the First World War, there was a renewed interest in cycling for leisure. One of these enthusiasts, Walter MacGregor Robinson, would write about his cycling escapades in the "Cycling" publication under the pen-name of "Wayfarer". One of his most famous pieces was published in 1919 entitled "Over the Top", a phrase that would have particular meaning to those recently having returned from fighting in the trenches. This piece told the tale of him and his companions as they cycled out one snowy March evening from the Chester area, overnighting in Llanarmon Dyffryn-Ceiriog and proceeding to ride (and walk) the drovers track from there up and over the Berwyn range; despite the locals' opinions that it was impassable due to the snow. Despite slow progress and many tumbles in the snow, they completed the traverse and returned home successfully. When Wayfarer died in the 1950s, a memorial plaque was placed at the summit of the pass and it remains a popular route to this day. Arguably one of the earliest origins of off-road "rough stuff" cycling! A copy of the original article is available here: https://www.cyclingnorthwales.co.uk/pages/wayfarer.htm

Not as bad as the road signs or elevation charts would suggest, nice long climb

Horseshoe Pass, or Bwlch yr Oernant to give it its Welsh name, is, by British standards at least, a fairly long pull at 6.2km. However it’s only after the first 2km that it reveals its beauty where, emerging from the woods, you can finally see the road sweeping up and back on itself, flanked by huge scree slopes and green carpeted hills.

The climb to the Horseshoe Pass from Llangollen for 6km is a gradual challenge, including the iconic U-turn. After that, the last kilometer to the café feels like a descent, but the gradient on the GPS computer would disagree!

Great bit of gravel riding. It’s rocky so rideable in the winter time. However it’s pretty wet!

At just under 6 km long with an average gradient of 5% and fantastic scenery this climb is really good and rewarding challenge for any cyclist. The first 1.5 km is a gradual introduction to the climb before a couple of steeper ramps need to be overcome. Once you're over these the road sweeps left taking you onto the horseshoe section, where again the road kicks up a couple of times before finally easing off as you kick on towards the summit. If you look right you will see the road below from where you have came and how much you have climbed. The tarmac is quite rough and pitted but still well worth it for the views and the sense of satisfaction when you reach the summit for a coffee and The Ponderosa Cafe.
