A nice start of the walk is to look at dolmen D45 which is located in the Emmerdennen a forest area in the town of Emmen. D45 is the third largest dolmen in the Netherlands and also has the outer ring. The 'from tree to forest' route is a very diverse walking route where you will encounter beautiful landscapes, but also the gnome forest.

This megalithic tomb is found in the Emmerdennen.

This dolmen is attributed to the Funnelbeaker culture, the collective name of a number of communities that lived in this area in the New Stone Age. It is perhaps no surprise that the pottery consisted mainly of funnel beakers. Evidence has been found that pottery containing remains of the funeral meal was buried in the grave. The serifs of dozens of pots have been found in the burial vault of dolmen D30, which was located at a depth of one meter.

In the middle of Boswachterij Odoorn there is an open heathland that was created after a heavy storm in 1972. It was then decided not to create a new forest, but to fence it off and allow sheep to graze there to keep it short. On this sheep field, at the edge of the forest, is the landscape temple 'Ode to the Sun'. This megalithic work of art was created in 2000 by Rob Schreefel. It consists of a 25-ton boulder (from Brittany) with a round hole in the middle that gives a special light effect.

These three small dolmens (D38, D39 and D40) are located together in the Valtherbosch, just north of the northern edge of Emmen. Be sure to pause your bike ride to admire these fascinating buildings.
