Wartensee Castle is located on a hill in Rorschacherberg above Lake Constance. It is surrounded by a large park and was once the country estate of a wealthy family. The history of the castle goes back to the 13th century. Its current form was achieved through a renovation in the 19th century. Only then did it acquire its current style, characterized by neo-Gothic elements. Today Wartensee Castle is used as a hotel and event location.

Well-preserved castle on the mountainside above Rorschach with keep made of sandstone blocks and adjacent residential buildings. The probably in the 12th century. The complex that was founded was the residence of the Knights of Rorschach until 1449 and then served as the bailiwick seat of the St. Gallen princedom. The castle chapel donated in 1509 in honor of St. Anne helped Rorschach Castle to get its current name «St. Anna Castle». It has been privately owned since 1805.

Wartensee Castle, Rorschacherberg Wartensee Castle is a historic building complex in the Rorschacherberg. It dates back to a residential tower from the 13th century and is now privately owned as the Wartensee Castle Hotel. It should not be confused with Wartegg Castle, which is also located in the municipality of Rorschacherberg. The western tower was built in 1243 by the knight Heinrich von Wartensee as a residential tower. Through the marriage of two female descendants, the tower passed to the brothers Walter and Diethelm Blarer from St. Gallen in 1377. The Blarer von Wartensee family owned Wartensee Castle until 1719 and expanded the castle into a triple residence. She sold her original castle to Kaspar Jakob Segesser von Brunegg. In 1757 his sons Franz Josef, Electoral Bavarian Chamberlain, and Franz Anton, Baden-Baden Colonel Equerry, sold Wartensee to the St. Gallen Monastery for 12,000 fl. The renovations carried out by the son of the English composer Robert Lucas Pearsall de Willsbridge between 1843 and 1853 also influenced its current appearance: This gave the castle its current neo-Gothic character and the surrounding park. Room facing south After further changes of ownership, the property was taken over by the Ostschweizerische Evangelische Heimstätte Schloss Wartensee association in 1955 and used as an educational center.[1] In 1984, Wartensee Castle became the property of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of St. Gallen, which - after extensive renovation between 1994 and 1996 - continued to operate it as a conference and meeting center until the end of 2011. Wonderful ruin on the top, mainly an archway like half of the main tower is accessible. Many other remains of the wall are overgrown, but further down there are 2 fire places.

Grimmenstein Castle, located above St. Margrethen, was a dreaded nest for robber barons. The striking building was destroyed in 1416 and never rebuilt. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1254. In 1315, Abbot Heinrich von Ramstein of the St. Gallen monastery appointed the knight Wilhelm von Enne, who came from South Tyrol, as the new lord of the castle and bailiff on Grimmenstein. The ecclesiastical rulers in St.Gallen and with them the Grimmenstein bailiffs increasingly harassed the population, which led to armed conflicts with the battles on Vögelinsegg and on the Stoss. In the course of hostilities, the castle was finally destroyed in 1416. The ruin was then used as a quarry. Only two legs of the imposing tower and the foundation walls remained. From 1936 to 1938 the castle ruins were uncovered, secured and placed under protection. Today Grimmenstein is a popular destination. (Source: St.Gallen-Lake Constance)

Castle construction It may well have been something like winning the lottery, which Grünenstein Castle owes its formative face to this day. The otherwise very wealthy Schindler family from Glarus won the Dutch state lottery, whereupon they converted the small, medieval castle from the 13th century into a large castle. Outside late baroque, inside rococo, Grünenstein was and is still an example of exemplary architecture of straightforward, "most solemn architectural achievement of local design". Less than ten years later, the Schindlers sold the new castle to Jakob Laurenz Custer. The Custer family foundation he set up for the benefit of his grandfather's descendants remained in the possession of Grünenstein until 1983. With the establishment of Gut Grünenstein AG in 1983, Max and Walter Custer, themselves beneficiaries of the foundation, took over the manorial property and led the castle on a new course. A short time later, you were joined by Jürg Schindler, a descendant of the builder. It was made available to the public, kissed awake from its deep slumber. Since then, the orientation towards third parties has been called: Open-minded. Nine apartments and various work rooms were set up, and cultural events, weddings and other celebrations take place in the many beautiful rooms in the tower and in the music hall and in the baroque garden. http://www.schloss-gruenenstein.ch/geschichte/schlossgeschichte/

The again visible walls of the St. Annaschloss in Rorschacherberg show that the complex was not built as a castle, but as a defiant, never conquered castle.
