The climb can be a bit complicated, since there is no marked path, but you can always guide yourself by looking at the top. The views from the top are spectacular. To the east, the Sierra de Gayúbar, the Peña de Carazo and the Fort San Carlos; a little further, the Sierra de la Demanda and the Campiña as the most prominent peak. To the north, the Sierra del Mencilla, the Pico Trigaza, and the Sierra de Peñalara.

Santo Domingo de Silos is a town and a monastery of Benedictine monks, located in the mountains of the southeast of the province of Burgos, 57 kilometers from the capital. The town and monastery are located in the eastern part of the Tabladillo valley, at 1000 meters above sea level and surrounded by high mountains of limestone rocks, sparsely covered with holm oaks, junipers, eskenes and pines.

At the foot of the Río Mataviejas is the town of Santo Domingo de Silos. The town is beautiful and is located in a small depression between mountains, where there is a mountain to the north of the center that flags it, the Peña de Carazo.

After a climb along a path between oaks, we arrive at the top of the cliffs, where we can see the perches of the griffon vultures, we will arrive at the natural viewpoint of the Peñas del Tuero, where the entire Arlanza Valley can be seen. Be careful, we are in a natural space, there is a ban on approaching the bird nesting area.

The route begins and ends in Carazo. We leave the car at the entrance to the town, where there is a garden; A paved road heading north brings us closer to the hermitage of the Virgen del Sol, where we will come to a sharp bend, continue north and enter the steep valley. When we reach the white house, the loose stone path begins, we will pass through a cave that remains to the left, a large cave called Cueva la Mora, where two horizontal caves in times of rain release water at great pressure. The Mataviejas River is born here. We continue up the path, it's starting to get a little bit choppy, and we find a beautiful waterfall, which flows from the rocks. You will only find it in times of intense rain. Once at the top, we follow the stone milestones that lead us to the northern part of the rock, where the views are more than impressive. A large number of griffon vultures fly over us, where we take the opportunity to tell you that from January to July it is not advisable to approach the steep cliffs, due to the presence of nests. We continue bordering the north face until we reach and finish the Carazo rock, a steep crack will allow us to descend to the plain. From this other side, we continue skirting the perimeter of San Carlos, where several observation towers come our way. ( ruined ). We return by the south face, and through a small access we enter the foot of the mountain to come out again to the plain. Direction Peña de Carazo again, we access a small path, along a steep path on a steep slope, about 10 meters, until we find the Camino de las Llanas, where it will take us back to Carazo. You can see this old path on the map, it is very comfortable to walk and beautiful. Origin of the publication: Naturarutas Blog. Recommended route with GPS. Not suitable for MTB.
