Neolithic long barrow. Worth a stop off if you’re passing.

Location for a picnic

Great views and all bridleway. You can stay at the top or ride a slightly more technical singletrack a level down at the end. You can drop down to lower levels at each corner or complete a lap.

Always great views no matter what the weather

Marvellous views over the Severn Vale and further into Wales. Sugarloaf is easily visible on a clear day.

Worth the visit, even though you have to walk for a while on a fairly busy road.

Nice views

A.K.A. Uley Long Barrow. Originally dated to around 3000 B.C. this long barrow was reconstructed during the late Victorian period. You can actually crawl inside of the chamber, which is bigger than the entrance suggests. The same field also contains the site of a Roman Temple, though this is buried and is not visible.

An Iron-age hill fort dating from 300B.C. An easy walking route around its perimeter which provides some spectacular views. The view of Smallpox Hill (Downham Hill) is particularly magnificent.

Downham Hill, known locally as "Smallpox Hill is an outlying hill from the surrounding Cotswold escarpment, separated by a small valley. It offers perhaps some of the best view in the valley if not the Cotswolds! Due to the physical nature of the hill it lent itself to being a Smallpox isolation hospital during the 18th and 19th century, making it one of the earliest isolation hospitals in the country. It is believed that the hospital played a roll in Edward Jenner’s studies of the disease, and aided his eventual discovery of the Smallpox vaccine.

If history is your thing this is definitely worth a little detour.

A short walk across the field from the main road and you will discover this delightful neolithic tump. You can crawl inside and view several chambers (tall enough to stand up). I suspect the original view across the Severn valley was stunning but now obscured by trees. Iron Age burial site

You are afforded spectacular views from Coaley Peak, which stretch right across the Severn Vale towards the Forest of Dean and beyond. Below the summit lies unimproved limestone grassland, owned and maintained by the National Trust.

Nympsfield Long Barrow stands high on the Cotswold scarp and affords incredible views over the Severn Valley. Constructed in the Neolithic period (around 2800 BCE), it is one of the earliest examples of a barrow with separate chambers. The site has long the subject of legends and bizarre stories, including one that it was once a refuge for lepers. The site is managed by English Heritage and is free to enter during daylight hours.

After you look out over the Severn Vale, head to the far left of the escarpment where you will find a gate and a second viewpoint.
