Banagher Forest is a large coniferous woodland featuring beautiful sitka spruce and peat covered slopes. It is one of the oldest ancient woodlands in the whole of Ireland and a real hidden gem.

There is an info board here near the peak of Crockmore that highlights some fascinating facts about blanket bog and the importance of it in terms of wildlife habitat. There is also some information about how historically the Irish have used blanket bog as fuel to heat the home and cooking!

The climb up Carntogher is a bit of a leg burner, but the views at the top make it all worthwhile. From the peak, you'll be afforded views across Lough Foyle to Errigal and Muckish in Donegal, Sawel and the high Sperrins, and south-east to The Mournes and Slieve Gullion.

Here you can enjoy views up to the beautiful Gallion mountains and the surrounding countryside of County Londonderry.

Slieve Gallion is 528 metres high and sits on the western shore of Lough Neagh. The mountain is a volcanic plug meaning it is formed from volcanic igneous rock and granite on the southern slopes. There is plenty of wildlife in the area with the Irish hare, the curlew and red grouse to spot.
