The suburb of Clifton, perched high on the cliffs, and the river flowing through the gorge below, are forever linked by the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge.

The Avon is a tidal river all the way inland to Netham Lock in Bristol. Below the lock, the river is directly influenced by the tides of the Bristol Channel and the Severn Estuary.

Entering from North Stoke keep your eyes peeled for a green bridle way sign which is easy to miss. It quickly gets steep and rocky with running water even during warmer summer spells, Strava segment is called PIPLEY BOTTOM ROCKY HORROR which is a fair description. Very technical descent and breaking on loose rocks is sketchy. I was on xc hardtail but defo hike a bike on a gravel rig. The ascent following is another hike a bike rooty and muddy. Worth a try to test out your technical skills on the down and the up.

Compact gravel all the way

A classic view of Bristol, looking down into the Avon Gorge from the Clifton Downs. Always worth a stop to take it in!

Sea Walls is one of the finest viewpoints for taking in the full majesty of the Avon Gorge. Perched above some of the gorge's mightiest crags, it’s common to be able to spot rock climbers ascending the impressive limestone faces. The distant Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the river, with the quarry-scarred, wooded slopes of Leigh Woods on the opposite bank.

Maybe a really good mountain biker could do it but not rideable on a gravel bike.

The river Avon trail connects Bristol and Pill and is a lovely alternative to the road cycleway. It can get a bit busy on weekends during the afternoons

A good cycle path for all but the skinniest of wheels and the right line has to be chosen in places. It's compacted gravel and dirt, so could get a bit boggy during or after wet weather. Lots of other users to be mindful of as well. There's some great views of the river, the cliffs and Clifton Suspension Bridge of course!

It’s hike-a-bike if you’re not on an MTB

Nice gravelly path with options going up into Leigh Woods. Gets very wet at times, and sometimes the river comes up over the path! Lots of dog walkers and families at weekends so dont go mad!

Great place to stop off on a ride round the downs.
