Internationally famous as a haven for birdwatchers in particular, Somerset Wildlife Trust’s main site on the Peat Moors covers more than 100 hectares. Restored peat diggings, three miles north-west of Glastonbury have been transformed into a network of open water, reed bed and the largest surviving fragment of lowland acid mire in the South-West. Designated as a National Nature Reserve, Westhay Moor was a pioneering project by Somerset Wildlife Trust, in the early 1980s. Since the site’s restoration it has become recognised as one of the top bird watching locations in Britain and often features in documentaries, including the BBC’s Springwatch and Autumnwatch series. Westhay's biggest attractions for birdwatchers arrive in autumn and stay through to January/ February -several million starlings fill the sky as they arrive to roost among the reeds each afternoon.

THE BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED GARDENS OF the Chalice Well surround Glastonbury’s most famous natural water source, the Red Spring, so called for the iron oxide it deposits in its basin. But just opposite this famous site, down a little lane at the foot of Glastonbury Tor, lies its counterpart: the White Spring.

Situated just a small walk from Glastonbury Centre, Glastonbury Tor Hill stands at a height of 158 m… The walk to the top is steep, and may require stops, but in general terms is only a small climb. The views are breath taking, on a clear day you can see across to the Bristol Channel. The views are amplified by the low land area which can be seen in every direction.

Rising above the village of Burrowbridge, this wonderfully named hill is a scheduled monument and is home to a Grade I listed ruined church on its summit. At 79 feet (24 m) high, it stands out from the flat land around and can be seen easily from the River Parrett Trail which passes by. Thanks to the Somerset Levels winter floods, Burrow Mump becomes somewhat of an island, like its cousin, Glastonbury Tor. A Norman motte and bailey castle was originally constructed here, but the only structure that remains is the impressive medieval church.

Glastonbury Tor is a hill near Glastonbury in the English county of Somerset, topped by the roofless St Michael's Tower, a Grade I listed building.[2] The entire site is managed by the National Trust and has been designated a scheduled monument.[1][3] The Tor is mentioned in Celtic mythology, particularly in myths linked to King Arthur, and has several other enduring mythological and spiritual associations. The conical hill of clay and Blue Lias rises from the Somerset Levels. It was formed when surrounding softer deposits were eroded, leaving the hard cap of sandstone exposed. The slopes of the hill are terraced, but the method by which they were formed remains unexplained. Archaeological excavations during the 20th century sought to clarify the background of the monument and church, but some aspects of their history remain unexplained. Artefacts from human visitation have been found, dating from the Iron Age to Roman eras. Several buildings were constructed on the summit during the Saxon and early medieval periods; they have been interpreted as an early church and monks' hermitage. The head of a wheel cross dating from the 10th or 11th century has been recovered. The original wooden church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1275, and the stone Church of St Michael built on the site in the 14th century. Its tower remains, although it has been restored and partially rebuilt several times.

Visit the Glastonbury White well to fill up for water bottles. The well is occasionally open to visitors and includes a VERY glastonbury style interior. Candles, incense, singing, naked people... it’s got it all. There is a tap on the outside from which fresh spring water continuously flows. The water is famed for its healing qualities.

Climbing the hill, which is thought by some to be the Arthurian Avalon, rewards you with amazing views of the Somerset Levels, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales. On its top, you can find the ruins of 15th-century St Michael's Church. Especially beautiful near sunrise or sunset, but quite windy at the top. Comfortable footwear required.
