Snibston's potential was spotted by George Stephenson, 'father of railways' whilst building a railway in the area. He bought the land when valuable coal reserves were discovered in the area. In 1832 he founded no. 1 and no. 2 pits that operated for for more than 150 years. Although you can see the Colliery buildings and machinery, all evidence of the mining is gone and replaced by a wonderfully ecologically diverse park to explore. There is also a cafe to have a bite to eat and a museum to learn more about the mining history.

Not a bad run around for an hour or so.. I found it 'challenging' in parts, but I've barely ridden in 15mths or more! Been here twice now and on both occasions cut short with punctures even tho' I'm running tubeless! there are some big thorns that don't do the sidewalls any good. My Tip: if you use a car or van, park on the 'bottom' precinct car park. It's now 2hrs free parking and its just a very short run to the discovery park following the old train line which is now tarmac. Chargeable after 2 hrs....

The Snibston Collieries (of which there were three in total) were first sunk in 1831 by George and Robert Stephenson. The sinking of Snibston No.2, now Snibston Colliery Park, commenced in 1832, and it remained in use until 1983.

Quite short but technical. Some nice flowing sections to sharpen the cross skills with a few steepish climbs to get the blood flowing.
