Running along the footpath through the dunes and you really feel like you are a million miles from everywhere. Expansive views and golden sand. Beautiful.

The helpers and conservationists give valuable tips on where the groups can best be seen at the moment and they protect these dear animals and discourage some unreasonable tourists from getting too close to the seals. When we passed through in early spring, we were amazed at the amount of Mute Swans on the surrounding farmland. On several occasions, groups of swans flew over to land in Upton Dyke and the River Bure. There is a small car park that is free to use.

Best viewing time for the seals (in my opinion) is early December until Christmas. This is because I love the older pups

Lots of seals on the beach, if you want to take good photos then avoid Horsey Gap as the beach is guarded by guards and prevents you from getting closer. Besides, the place is always full of people.

Big seal colony - easy to access

Did you know that about half of the world's grey seal population lives in Britain? Many of these live around Norfolk. At Horsey, you can come and see these lovely animals that live in and around the beach. In winter, thousands of seals come to the shore to have their pups. Upton Dyke is set amid marshes which have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, due to the rare wildlife here. The area is in the care of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. As you follow the dyke, you can admire the moored boats and keep a look out for rare birds and insects.

Horsey Mere is regarded as one of the most beautiful of the northern broads. Close to the Norfolk coast, Horsey's reed beds and grazing marshes offer a habitat of international importance for birds, including wigeon, teal, shoveller, pochard, gadwall, goldeneye, tufted duck, bitterns, stonechats, yellow wagtails, and grasshopper warblers. You might even spot two rare warblers here; Cetti's and Savi's. According to folklore, on 13th June every year the screams of drowned children can be heard from the mere.

Be sure to keep dogs under control and on a lead. Lots of seals along various parts of the beach. The route we took involved a short steep climb over the sand a sand dune to access the beach and the seals were there at the other side. Nice long beach and great to see British wildlife up close. Obviously don’t get up too close and scare them.

This is the perfect spot to catch Norfolk seals. Between November to about February hundreds of grey seals breed here. If you’re in the area around this time, then you have to catch the magnificent and forever-memorable sight.
