Slådalsvegen is a classic gravel mountain road, climbing from Lesja to 1,180 metres (3,870 ft) on a steady grade. Open only in summer and autumn, this former livestock track is now a toll road enjoyed by cyclists for its big-sky scenery and rewarding, panoramic descent.

The high pass between Sikkilsdalen and Gjende – the gateway to Jotunheimen – Sikkilsdalskardet is an important path junction. It features on both the Omveien and Jotunheimstien long-distance trails and affords glorious views.

Knutshøe is a similarly challenging alternative to Besseggen. The view is no less spectacular. Nevertheless, Knutshøe is worth a visit and can easily be hiked in a day from the Gjendesheim hut.

At the top of the pass there are fantastic waffles in the café, clean toilets and a magnificent view. This is a great place to replenish lost calories. The pass road itself is easy to drive, but beware of tourists driving unsteadily.
