From the bridge, you can already see the first beaver dam. Further on, there's another one, and you'll also see beaver lodges and information boards about our friend, the beaver. But here too, the area is packed with information boards, both old and new. There's also a picnic table.

In the 18th century, this was a pedestrian crossing, especially for residents of the hamlets of Werchter located across the Laak River. Tremelo was not yet an independent municipality or parish at the time. The residents relied on Werchter for their civic and religious duties. Their journey took place along centuries-old footpaths, which were the longest-spared from the recurring winter floods. Source: http://www.grotelaakbeek.be/docs/Laakfolder-TussenDemerEnDijle.pdf

The Balenberg in Baal is much more than just a hill. This is the home base of the Sven Nys Cycling Center, where sports, nature and experience come together. With its modest height, the Balenberg is an ideal place for those who want to test their legs on a short climb, but also for families who like to walk or cycle in a green environment. At the top of the hill you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Hageland, and in the museum you can discover the impressive story of cyclo-cross legend Sven Nys. The surrounding routes take you over gravel paths, sunken roads and quiet country roads — perfect for both the sporty cyclist and the recreational walker. A stop at the Balenberg is a must during your trip in the heart of Flemish Brabant!

A small slope, but an excellent place to have a quiet drink during the bike ride. Bikes can be safely secured and there is a possibility to charge. From the terrace a beautiful view of the area. There is also a bike museum and associated shop. Ideal stop during a bike ride through the area.

The Chartreuzenbos is a forest in the Belgian municipality of Holsbeek and is part of one of the most important nature reserves in Hageland. The forest is approximately 70 hectares in size. The Chartreuzenbos is protected in Europe as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Valleien van de Winge en de Motte met valleihellingen' (BE2400012). The name refers to the former owners, the monastery of the Carthusians of Leuven.

The Chartreuse Forest offers MTB'ers a challenging mix of narrow paths, technical sections and breathtaking nature. The route winds through dense forests, with elevation changes that are a pleasure for both beginners and advanced riders.

At the end of the 18th century, the flatter parts of the so-called Kesselberg consisted mainly of heathland. On the Ferraris map (1777) the area is mentioned as 'Vlierbeekse heide'. The surrounding slopes were already forested at that time. This was the case for most of the Lindenbos and the steep slopes east of the main avenue in the Chartreuzenbos, the northern slope towards Holsbeek and the current Kesselberg. The heath was later converted into agricultural land, later a large part of this area became birch fields and the western part of the Chartreuz Forest became forested. Until the French Revolution, the area surrounding the Chartreuz Forest was the property of the Carthusian Order. In the period of the Brabant revolution (1789) and the French invasion (1792), the goods of the churches and monasteries were secularized and dissolved. Quite a few of those properties came into the hands of OCMWs. For example, a number of plots in the Chartreuzenbos also became the property of the OCMW of Leuven. However, most of the Linden and Chartreuzenbos came into the hands of private owners. This and much more in this brochure from the Flemish Brabant Agency for Nature and Forests: https://www.natuurruimtes.be/sites/default/files/folder_linden-_en_chartreuzenbos.pdf

Forest of the Carthusians Where does the Chartreuzenbos get its name from? Very easy. Until the French Revolution, the area was owned by the Carthusian order 'les pères Chartreux'. At that time the area consisted mainly of heathland. Only later did it become wooded. Nowadays, the former heathland is recovering in a clearing in the middle of the forest. In the east and northeast of the domain, steep slopes form the transition to the Winge Valley.

Magnificent open part, but the western access is via a very muddy portion in winter, very slippery. Perfect for mountain biking (according to other comments), a bit of a headache for beginners in gravel (I learned that the hard way..!). Accustomed to road cycling, going through this type of path is always a magical moment.

Ideal as a base for the Sven Nys Cycling Route or to stop along the way and have a coffee/cake/lunch/etc..! Very friendly staff! (The people at the desk downstairs kept an eye on my bike while I went for a coffee because I didn't have a lock with me..)

The first part of the descent goes smoothly, after which there is a long, smooth extension that runs the entire length of the Beninksberg.
