The originally mighty, four-story city gate was badly damaged in 1648 by the siege of Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War and in 1649 - as an old chronicle puts it - "suddenly collapsed." It was hastily repaired, but collapsed again in 1651 and 1654. In 1655, Antonio Don rebuilt it in the Baroque style in its current form, complete with the characteristic onion dome.
