With an extension of over 11,000 hectares (approx. 11,400 ha), the Valli di Comacchio constitute the largest complex of brackish wetlands in Italy. Bounded to the south by the Reno River and to the north by lands resulting from the reclamation that has affected the area over the centuries, the valley complex includes the Valli Fossa di Porto, Lido di Magnavacca, Campo, Fattibello, Capre and Molino. To these are added Valle Zavelea, Pega and Umana, relics of valleys now reclaimed. Recognized as a Wetland of International Importance on 13 July 1981 pursuant to the Convention on wetlands of importance, especially as a habitat for aquatic birds signed in Ramsar on 2 February 1971, the Valli di Comacchio are also considered a Site of Community Importance SIC and a Special Protection Area SPA. In 2015, as part of the Man and Biosphere MAB programme, UNESCO recognised the entire area of the Po Delta Park as a Biosphere Reserve.

The lagoons and canals of the Comacchio valleys, famous for their biodiversity, are an important nature reserve and an ideal place for bird watching, including flamingos. The area is also famous for eel farming.

The Special Nature Reserve of Alfonsine is a small regional reserve, covering about 12 hectares, established under the L.R. 11/88 by the Emilia Romagna Region in 1990 and managed by the Municipality of Alfonsine in collaboration with the Atlantide Cooperative. It consists of three stations, which offer shelter to numerous animal and plant species and testify to the landscape that once characterized the low Ravenna plain.

The Oasis of the Vallette of Ostellato is what remains of the ancient valleys that surrounded the town, spared from the last reclamation of the Mezzano valley and today an oasis of wildlife protection. They consist of 4 valley loops which constitute a biotope of a wetland of fresh water. In the Vallette there are 150 species of aquatic birds, nesting. You can see all kinds of herons, the great white, the gray and the red, numerous waders, including the Black-winged stilt, birds of prey, such as the marsh harrier, the buzzard. The vegetation is typical of freshwater wetlands, characterized in the permanently flooded areas by reeds, white and yellow water lilies, flowering rush. On the banks there are white willow, water chestnut and elderberry. The Oasis is well equipped for various activities such as bird watching, walking, cycling and horseback riding, sport fishing. At the entrance there is also an astronomical observatory. N.B. I would add a negative note: the final part of the Oasis is closed and not usable for about 6 km of path and there is an access price to the Oasis for both walking and cycling of € 2 per person. Apart from the cost of the ticket which would certainly be worth the price for the beauty of the area, it is not acceptable to find rotten and decaying unused wooden bridges and piers with closed routes due to general neglect.
