A few steps from the historic center of Carmagnola there is a protected area of great naturalistic interest: La Lanca di San Michele, an ancient riverbed, now abandoned, which has been transformed into a beautiful wetland rich in flora and fauna typical of the river environment and the Bosco del Gerbasso where, thanks to valuable scientific work, a strip of the original Po Valley plain forest has been recreated. Inside there is a beach, picnic area, observation points and many other points of interest.

It is not immediate to get there, because the most comfortable road (from the Madonna degli Orti) is, at least in theory, closed by a gate with private access; but it can be reached quite comfortably from the Bertrand forest. This tour only touches it but is worth a visit in itself. The Merlino forest, located in the municipality of Caramagna Piemonte, is the most recent of the Piedmont nature reserves, having become a protected area in March 2019; the forest is also a Special Conservation Zone (ZSC IT1160010 "Bosco del Merlino"). It constitutes one of the last forest plains of the Cuneo plain considered, despite its modest current extension (351 ha), a significant example of this environment in the entire Po valley. It consists of two nuclei, called respectively Bosco Grande (Bosco del Merlino) and Bosco Piccolo (Bosco della Pica), lapped by the Meletta torrent, dominated by the oak-carpineto of the low plain (habitat 9610) and delimited mainly by meadows and arable land.
