The ruins of one of the largest temples in the Greek world. The sheer number of giant stones is incredible.

The Selinunte Archaeological Park is located near the ancient city of Greek origin. Today, it is the largest archaeological park in Europe. The ruins of this once mighty Greek city are impressive and give you a glimpse into the ancient world while enjoying the scenic landscape of Sicily's southern coast. It's best to visit the site early in the morning as there is little shade and the site is quite large, so plan plenty of time. The remains of the large temples are particularly fascinating, standing as silent witnesses to the city's former glory. Temples C and E are particularly striking, with the latter partially rebuilt, if not quite to current archaeological standards. Selinunte was one of the most important Greek sites in Sicily. The city flourished before it was eventually taken and largely destroyed by the Carthaginians. The earthquakes that struck the region did the rest, but that's exactly what makes the site so impressive today: the toppled columns and ruins are silent proof of the transience of human architecture. Selinunte is a wonderful place to hike, enjoy the views and immerse yourself in history at the same time. The proximity to the sea also ensures a fresh breeze during your visit.

Located in the highest area of the small hill overlooking the plain of Gibellina Nuova, the Mother Church presents itself as a symbol of rebirth, in the perfection of the white sphere that expands over the entire valley determining a very strong appeal to the observer as a place of worship. The Mother Church was designed in 1972 by Ludovico Quaroni, and as stated in his project "it is an architectural object and a monument, it is the most important creation of the entire civic complex, if only because it is the last emergency, it is the crown of the city."

It's best to visit early in the morning. The area is large and there is almost no shade. I was there for at least 3 hours. Opening times vary depending on the season.

There is a well-equipped bar and toilets at this point. It is also one of the few places with shade.
