At 2,061 meters above sea level, Mount Morrone is located on the border between the provinces of Pescara and L'Aquila, within the Majella national park. From this top, the view is simply enchanting. The paths that lead here are all very easy and have no particular technical characteristics. It's really fun to run in this area.

The grandeur of the Orfento Valley can be fully perceived along this path, with incredible passages that wind along the edge of the valley, offering breathtaking views. Once you reach the bridge, the crystal clear water of the Orfento almost touches your shoes, accompanying you to the end of the itinerary, where you dive into the deepest part of the gorge.

The Cave of Sant'Angelo di Lettomanoppello in the Vallone di Sant'Angelo is a place of uncertain origin, mentioned in the Decrees of the First Holy Visit of the bishop of Chieti in 1844. It is believed that the hermitage is dated thanks to the presence of a statue of San Michele Arcangelo similar to that of San Tommaso in Caramanico, dating back to the XIII century. According to legend, the hermitage was inhabited by a man of holiness, but he mysteriously disappeared leaving behind the statue of the angel. In front of the rocky outcrop where a church once stood, today only a rectangular enclosure remains called the Bed of Sant'Angelo. Furthermore, in front of the church is the Fonte del Garzillo.

The route through the Orfento Valley is a simple and short connection between Caramanico Terme and the Sentiero dello Spirito. Known locally as "Sentiero delle Scalelle", this path follows a descent and winds along the area of the Visitor Center and the Casa del Lupo. In a few minutes you arrive at a spectacular panoramic point over the valley, while you can already hear the sound of the Orfento river.

This place is a splendid oasis of tranquility, where the cave is located which was the first modest refuge of the hermit Pietro da Morrone, located on the slopes of the homonymous mountain. You can reach the hermitage through stairs carved into the rock. The climb itself is not too demanding given the modest difference in altitude. However, if the climb is still too tiring, you can travel most of the way by car and park a few meters from the hermitage.
