Finally – the ramp for slow-moving traffic is currently under construction. From the end of 2026, the steep ramp next to the stairs and the artwork by Richard Serra will finally be accessible.

Stupid climb to the bridge...but great view!

There is a great, bilingual book about the creation of the Schiffenen reservoir, over which the viaduct runs, with many pictures of the time before the Saane was dammed. It also has portraits of contemporary witnesses who had roots in the Saane valley. The book was published in 2012 by the O.S.K.A.R. association. The Galterntal with its Galtern Gorge is a real leisure and natural paradise. Along the gorge, countless bridges, arches, footbridges and walkways line the steep walls. Joggers and hikers alike are out and about here. For dogs, the four-legged gorge walkers, the builders of the bridges have here and there made paw-friendly attachments so that the animals do not injure their paws on the partially metal perforated plates.

The Galternbach is a tributary of the Saane. It flows into the Saane at the Bern Bridge in Freiburg. Coming from the village of Galtern in the east, the stream flows westwards in wide curves and meanders through a long, wooded valley, which in places narrows like a gorge. Here, at a loop of the Galternbach, bridges lead over the stream. There is a nice rest area on a flat hill in the gorge!

At this curve, the wonderful hiking trail leads over a bridge and thus changes from one side of the stream to the other. On the left side of the stream (east of the bridge), the trail leads down/up the steep valley slope in bends, mostly with wooden steps; on the other (right) side (west of the bridge), the trail leads along the steep slope on a wooden footbridge, partly with steps. All in all, an exciting section of the Galtern trail!

The Grandfey Viaduct on the railway line from Bern to Freiburg is one of the largest bridges in Switzerland. It was built between 1858 and 1862 and is 334 m long and 82 m high. With the electrification of the Swiss Federal Railways' rail network, the bridge had to be reinforced in order to be able to carry the heavier and faster locomotives and train compositions. Based on a concept by Robert Maillart, the pioneer of large concrete structures in Switzerland, the Grandfey Viaduct was given its new design between 1925 and 1927.
