Group of dawn redwoods in the Zingst Osterwald

There are dawn redwoods near Zingst; they are located in the Osterwald, the region's largest forest area, where they were planted for research purposes in the 1950s. These trees, scientifically known as Metasequoia glyptostroboides, are an attraction and considered living fossils among conifers, shedding their leaves in the fall and turning golden brown.

Nowhere else in the national park is the landscape, its flora and fauna, currently undergoing such impressive and diverse transformation as on the Zingst. Forests, moors, and meadows are undergoing a transformation to their original, natural state.

The nature reserve stretches between the Osterwald (west), the Pramort (east), the Baltic Sea (north) and the Grabow (south). To the northeast of the area is the largest unforested white dune landscape on the Baltic coast. At the beginning of the area - at the last parking lot - is the Zingst information center. Its exhibitions illustrate the development of Ostzingst and the international importance of the national park.
