In 1910, cylinder-like depressions were uncovered in the rock in the limestone quarry on Hardelsberg (Lower Muschelkalk, formed around 240 million years ago). These are so-called glacial potholes. These hollows were washed out during the Ice Age by meltwater that carried sand and gravel. They were formed around 140,000 years ago, in the penultimate glacial period (Saale glacial period). At that time, the area was covered by several hundred meters of inland ice that stretched from Scandinavia to the edge of the Harz Mountains. Source: display board

According to legend, the robber Daneil lived here. The three hollow spaces were artificially expanded and may have once been storage rooms.

Stromatolites (from ancient Greek στρῶμα stroma, German 'blanket' and λίθος lithos 'stone') are biogenic sedimentary rocks that are formed by the capture and binding of sediment particles or precipitation of dissolved substances as a result of the growth and metabolism of microorganisms in a body of water (biomineralization). They are usually layered and often consist of very finely layered limestone. The internal structure of the stromatolites is different: flat, even layers, upwardly curved layers, several curved layer packages next to each other (column shape). Some are reminiscent of a cauliflower with their shell-like structure of tubers, columns or wavy layers. Source: Wikipedia
