Sorgeto Bay is one of the hidden treasures of Ischia. It is located on the south coast of the island and offers a unique natural thermal experience thanks to its natural hot springs that flow directly into the sea, creating a mixture of hot and cold water. TIP: The bay can be reached by land via the hamlet of Panza in the municipality of Forio, climbing 250 panoramic steps, or by sea with a taxi boat from the village of Sant’Angelo which also connects with Maronti beach.

There are hot thermal springs by the sea

It is an islet of lava which today is surrounded by masonry a few steps from the iron pier from where the hydrofoils leave. In fact, it is said that Marco, the prince, during a rhetorical exercise, asked Fronto, his teacher, the meaning of that islet located in the center of that volcanic lake that was once the port. The master then proposed to the prince a metaphor to explain the presence of that islet; he said that just as the father kept the worries of the government away from his son, so the island sheltered the islet from the stormy sea. All this in 140 AD. when Marcus Aurelius was about to become Emperor and when what is now the port was a volcanic lake. One of the sources signed by Pliny also tells of the presence of a small villa, a thesis supported by the presence of an 18th century painting where it was painted. In this regard, the archaeologist George Buchner wrote: “ […]thanks to a curious fact we also know that around 140 AD. C. on the small lava island, today a round surrounded by masonry, there was a house! There is a letter from Prince Marcus Aurelius who wrote to his master Fronto to ask for advice. He was engaged in rhetorical exercises, and since he had heard that a lake existed on the island of Aenaria and an islet also inhabited in this lake, he wanted to know how this curious phenomenon could be used, and Fronto replied that it could be said that the large island shelters the islet from the storms of the sea just as the father keeps the worries of the government away from the son”.

The island of Vivara, a mysterious and fascinating portion of land connected to Procida by an old bridge, is a naturalistic oasis protected since 1974 and a state nature reserve since 2002. Small, wild and unspoiled Vivara, as well as being populated by rare plants, wild rabbits and numerous water birds, it is home to important archaeological finds of Mycenaean origin.
