An excerpt: (Wadden Sea bird meeting point) "The Wadden Sea in the North Sea, which stretches from the Dutch coast to Denmark, comprises the largest contiguous mudflat area in the world. [...] In autumn and spring, many migratory birds stop off on their journey from their breeding grounds to their winter quarters and back and build up energy reserves for the long onward flight. Some of them stay the whole winter and use the isolation and the plentiful food sources to rest and eat, so that they can then start the new breeding season in the far north strengthened the following spring. [...]"
