The lower bridge has washed out (summer 2024) and the only detour is a dangerously slippery footpath with several exposed sections above the river. Real chance of falling in, no alternative detours, repairs should be happening at some point but will likely take years to be completed. Best to cross the Alay mountains elsewhere.

The Kyrgyz are closing the pass and building a fence. There have been too many landslides and the actual path is no longer recognizable. It's a real torture on a bike, I can't recommend it.

This section requires to mostly carry or push your bike as there has been multiple landslide and the trail is covered on slate for most of the way. Be careful when you are stepping to avoid sliding. There is no access to water in this section.

Allow me to explain. My partner and I wanted to get over this pass to ride down to Murdash, and were told it was a steep but doable pass. We wanted to include it in our Expedition Alay bikepacking route, and decided to try it. But after 4 hours of pushing up 6km, with dust filling our shoes and every pore in our body, we collapsed in our tent and decided to return downhill the next morning. Even if you're descending, this track will seriously dust you up. It's steep, dry, and if someone floods the road (which happened with us) it turns to a muddy mess that can seriously clog your bike and drivetrain. Have a look at the images before attempting this, and good luck if you do!

Excellent riding conditions, steep climb upwards, connecting Kyzyl-Alay with Kojokelen village. The landscape will change to get much greener after you go further south.

A physically challenging section for those climbing with their bike, and tough on the breaks of those pushing down. This side of Jiptik is a longer to ascend, but far less narrow than the southern side.

My partner and I pushed this way up, with our fully loaded bikes. It is a grueling, steep and narrow super rocky, slippery track. For the way down it's probably fine to walk, maybe even ride if you're courageous! Either way, be careful!

Fantastic gravel road, steep downhill gradients and so much fun to ride. Not to mention the colors of the surroundings and the fact that no one really crosses this pass. It's very quiet!

With minor ups and downs, this pass and its many colors is such an enjoyable ride.

A magnificent pass at 3800m, with a fine road surface on both sides. I'd argue it's easier to get up on from the northside, if you're willing to slowly climb all the way from Uch-Korgon.

All on gravel, but pretty steep. We walked most of the climb.
