This complex, which still impresses visitors today—what must the people of that time have felt when they saw it?—has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The television series "Treasures of the World – Heritage of Humanity," which I highly recommend, documents these sites in film segments (each lasting a quarter of an hour). "On a 634-meter-high hill stands Spissky Hrad (Spiš Castle), with its Romanesque palace, keep, and Gothic chapel, as well as the Zápolský Palace, Spisská Kapitula (Spiš Chapter), the former seat of the Spiš Provostship with its provost and twelve canons belonging to the chapter; the three-aisled Cathedral of St. Martin, with one of the few surviving Romanesque sculptures in Slovakia, the 'White Lion,' and the Church of the Holy Spirit in Zehra," it states the series' website. Beautiful nature—just way too crowded. You have to start very early to avoid waiting in line for the ladders. Unfortunately, the crowds ruin the atmosphere.

In my opinion, this is the most challenging—but also the most beautiful—tour in the Slovak Paradise. At the sight of the high ladder, many hikers take a short break, grab their water bottle, and gaze up in awe.

It's a beautiful place, but there are no railings, so you have to be very careful to avoid falling.
