Tourism A 12.4 km long circular path leads through the nature reserve around Lake Großkayna. There, apart from nature, you can also admire two herds of wild horses and a herd of wild cows. There are also two towers, each with information boards and a picnic table. There are also several information boards around the lake about the Braunsbedra mining area. From Lake Großkayna there are paths to Lake Runstedt and Lake Geiseltal. There is also a sailing club and a surfing club on the north bank. In the eastern part of Lake Großkayna you can sunbathe on several unofficial beaches or swim in the lake.

Origin The former Rheinland mine was opened up in 1906 by the Michelwerke, one of the largest mining companies in the central German lignite mining area until 1945. In 1949 it was renamed the Großkayna opencast mine. The opencast mine was exhausted in 1972, and waste from the Roßbach opencast mine was washed away until 1978. In contrast to the Geiseltalsee and the Runstedter See as part of the Geiseltal lake complex, the lake was flooded in the 1980s. The southern part of the lake has been designated as the European bird sanctuary Kayna-Süd post-mining landscape with an area of 222 hectares. An asphalted cycle and hiking path surrounds the lake, which also functions in part as part of the brine, coal and history cycle path.

A magnet for cyclists and day-trippers, just don't forget the old hiking trails, otherwise you'll lose the hikers.
