As you hike through this stretch of the OHT, you’ll see plenty of signs of forest renewal, with less dense forest and open terrain and a recovering understory where native oak and pine are making a comeback. This area is part of the Ozark Highlands Ecosystem Restoration Project, launched in 2012 to improve habitat for wildlife such as wild turkeys, prairie warblers, and northern bobwhites. As you reach the upper end of this area toward Whiting Mountain (traveling east), the trail opens up to beautiful views of the Mulberry River Valley below.

There is a short spur trail here that leads to a seasonal tributary to Herrods Creek. It can be dry at times at the beginning of fall, but if you're here in late winter or early spring, the water runs nice and clear, making it worth the quick side trip to see if it is flowing.

This spur trail runs roughly 1 ½ miles south to reach the Mulberry River, a popular spot for paddling with beautiful views. Byrd’s Adventure Center sits right along the river and offers tent sites, cabins, and amenities for hikers looking to rest or resupply, including warm showers, a convenience store, and a restaurant. This spur is the perfect exit or resupply point for thru-hikers navigating the OHT’s midsection.

Fane Creek is clear and beautiful as it flows through this quiet forest stretch, with smooth rock, gentle cascades, and small pools. The crossing is usually manageable, though the flat rock can be slick after rain, so take care with footing. There are two or three excellent campsites just a few yards upstream, with stone chairs, fire rings, flat tent space, and easy access to water—perfect for a restful overnight, or a spot to take a few hours to rest and recharge.

Spirits Creek is a wide and reliable stream in the Ozark Highlands, known for its steady flow due to a large drainage area and headwaters that are over two miles upstream. Just a short walkable distance upstream is a charming eight-foot waterfall called Spirits Creek Falls, set in a beautiful valley, with easy access to nearby cascades like Robinson Falls. The creek also has great campsites and is a vital water source along the Ozark Highlands Trail.

Train Trestle Falls is a beautiful 31-foot cascade nestled in the Ozark Highlands, framed by an old railroad trestle overhead. The falls tumble over mossy rock ledges into a shallow pool, creating a lovely setting to capture a few photos, especially after a recent rainfall. Though modest in flow during dry spells, its secluded charm and unique setting make it an ideal spot for a scenic break.

White Rock Mountain Recreation Area spans nearly 80 acres, with stunning views from its mountaintop perch at 2,260 feet, rustic stone cabins, and a lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The campground includes nine primitive campsites and one group site with tent pads, fire rings, grills, picnic tables, restrooms, and water; all on a first-come, first-served basis for a $15 fee. There are a couple of nice hiking trails here, including a 13.4-mile loop to Shores Lake and a scenic 1.5-mile rim trail with overlooks of the Ozark National Forest. There is a general store that offers drinks, snacks, shelf-stable groceries, and maps of the trails in the area, making it a perfect stop, whether you're planning an overnight stay or just need to reset and resupply while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
