Via Francigena: During this stage, a stop in Bar-sur-Aube is a must. Situated on a north-south axis, the town acquired strategic importance and the status of a commercial centre during the period of the Counts of Champagne. The latter had indeed guaranteed the security of the merchants and set up an adapted logistical organisation that contributed to the development of Bar-sur-Aube as a commercial centre. Thus, from mid-February to mid-April, traders from Flanders and Italy exchanged oriental spices, silk, textiles and raw materials from Northern Europe. The architecture of the town bears witness to this past activity.

Two rivers cross the pretty town of Bar-sur-Aube. These are the Aube river which gives its name to the department and the Bresse. Numerous Champagne vineyard hillsides surround it, which makes it a renowned place for the production of champagne.

Founded in 1115 by Saint Bernard, Clairvaux Abbey became a prison in 1808. The abbey has seen centuries of history pass by. Located in the heart of humid Champagne, in Ville-sous-la-Ferté, this Cistercian complex with majestic buildings rises in the middle of an ocean of greenery.

Situated at an altitude of 349 metres, Sainte-Germaine Hill offers a magnificent view of the entire valley from the orientation table. The remains of the embankments and ditches of a Gallic oppidum, called the "Roman camp", still remain. Traces of ancient fortifications can also be seen. A chapel is dedicated to Sainte-Germaine.

It was in 1115, on the borders of Champagne and Burgundy, that the future Bernard of Clairvaux, accompanied by 12 monks from Cîteaux, came to clear a clearing in the Val d'Absinthe. Later a labor force, the great abbey of the "clear valley", formed the group of the four "major" daughters (first foundations) of Cîteaux. Planted with vines and animated by barns, forges and mills, it will be strong with hundreds of filiations throughout Europe, definitively imbued with Cistercian spirituality.

Clairvaux Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Ville-sous-la-Ferté in the Aube department in France. The abbey was founded in 1115 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most important figures of the Cistercian order. The abbey was a center of religion, culture and politics in the Middle Ages and the mother of many other monasteries in Europe. The abbey was abolished in 1792 during the French Revolution and converted into a prison, which is still in use today. The abbey is located in a green valley and has an impressive architecture in Romanesque and Gothic style. The abbey is a historic monument and can be visited under a guide.

A climb with with coarse gravel, especially near the top. The steepest part of the climb consists of a concrete road. I did the climb with 32mm tyres and I had to walk parts of the climb due the coarse gravel. So I only would recommend it when you are on a mountainbike or gravelbike with wide tyres. You can skip the coarsest gravel at the top by riding through the grass of the left vineyard.

Clervaux, founded by St. Bernard, became a state security prison after the revolution and remains so to this day with 35 prisoners still in it. The prison is scheduled to close in 2023. Here, religious history is mixed with the depressing history of the prison. Despite everything, a very interesting 90-minute tour

"Monastery Clairvaux The abbey was founded on June 25, 1115 by Bernard of Clairvaux and twelve monks in Bernard's so-called clara vallis, a 'bright valley', .... ... The Cistercian abbey of Clairvaux was abolished in 1791 as a result of the French Revolution and from 1808 (until July 2016) largely used as a prison. The rest of the building houses a museum that is freely accessible. " Source: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kloster_Clairvaux
