Kemnat Castle near Kaufbeuren features a historic well, originally located in the middle of the castle courtyard and now situated 20 meters east of the keep. The well is 26 meters deep and, along with the keep and the administrative building, was the only structure to survive the castle's demolition in 1804. The well is part of the ruins of Kemnat Castle, built in 1185 as a spur castle on a promontory. Although the tower is mistakenly referred to as the "Roman Tower"—a designation originating with the Historical Society of Swabia—it is in fact the keep of the medieval castle.

While you're here, be sure to visit the Five-Knob Tower and St. Blasius Church (ring the bell at the house opposite to visit). For quiet contemplation, the Crescentia Sisters' monastery garden lies between them. (The garden is closed during the winter months.)

During the Stations of the Cross (Good Friday 2010) in the Colosseum in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI formulated the following thought, which might also be of interest to the passing hiker/walker here in front of this very individually designed small sacred monument – a wayside cross dedicated to Saint Crescentia of Kaufbeuren (1682–1744): “In the silence that embraces Holy Saturday, we live, touched by the boundless love of God, in anticipation of the morning of the third day, the morning of the victory of God’s love, the morning of light that allows the eyes of the heart to see life, difficulties, and suffering in a new way. Our failures, our disappointments, our bitter experiences, where everything seems to collapse, are illuminated by hope.” The Father confirms the loving act [of Jesus Christ] on the cross, and the radiant light of the Resurrection envelops and transforms everything… (Pope Benedict XVI)

Built between 1960 and 1962, two Voith-Kaplan turbines generate 1.8 MW of electrical energy. This is enough to power a single-family home for about half a year, thus disproving the myth that renewable energy isn't worth it! In contrast, all the drilling, baby, drilling is completely pointless! It's destroying our planet; we're still fighting wars over resources, even though the sun provides 10,000 times more energy. We finally need to unlock this potential; balcony power plants are a great first step! Small contribution, big impact!
