With its 700 hectares, the Mechelse Heide is one of the largest heath areas in Flanders. The beautiful purple carpet of flowering heather during the summer is a delight to the eye. It is therefore a pleasure to walk through it. Among the many types of heather plants, you will also find the red heather here, a rare species in Belgium. If you climb to the steep edge of the Kempen plateau of this first nature reserve in Limburg, nature will treat you to a beautiful view of the heathland and the Maasland.
