The Great Crested Newt hut is gone. Dead. Demolished. Nothing stands in its place yet (except for the installation of "Valleien Vertellen" (Valleys Telling Stories), an open-air exhibition that will move to the Dijle River in early 2026 and previously visited the Demer). Will a new hut be built? An illustrated information board says so. And so does the yellow building permit. One local resident, however, has his doubts. But he had more doubts about the events in his neighborhood. So: yes, a new hut will be built unless the axes of the political budget choppers indirectly lead to a different decision in the long term. What it should look like? You can see that on the information board, which also asks for a little more patience. In any case: it will remain beautiful here, with or without the hut.

Close to the entrance with parking and one of the lowest walking points in the nature reserve (a large part of the path runs high, on the walls of the former quarry). Whether you will see a lot is another matter. But I have never seen such extensive illustrated information boards in a viewing hut that maps the entire ecosystem of the nature reserve. That alone makes this viewing hut more than worth it.

Nice place to sit with a beautiful gorge behind this house.

Here you'll go to the birdwatching hut on the water, which is located a few meters further out on the lake. In normal, wet conditions, you'll also walk a fair distance above the lake, which is surrounded on both sides by a boardwalk with poles. From the hut itself, you can see almost the entire lake, and it usually doesn't take long for waterfowl like cormorants to fly past your lens. On both sides of the path, you can admire the water lilies, depending on the season, of course.

The name Mollendaal and Mollendaalbos has many variations. For example, people here also speak of the shelter at De Moemedel and Mommedel (as the forest reserve is called). The hut is also open at the back. You can see the small valley that lies there. Or call it a valley because that is where the name comes from. And quite a few springs originate. Fun fact: the current shelter is fairly new and largely made with recycled wood from the previous one. It also has a Sedum roof, you know: a green roof. Finally: this shelter is located on the GR 512 Brabantse Heuvelroute.

Get away from the walking path for a while, to watch the playful behavior on the water... The sound here is the tranquility of the life of the breeding birds...
