The first structure dates back to the Bronze Age, while a later one was built in the Middle Ages. It was a manor house constructed of wood, resting on a stone base. No traces of a surrounding wall have been found. The originally much larger plateau shrank over time as parts of it repeatedly slipped away, thus eliminating any fortifications. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that a protective stone wall never existed; rather, only a palisade was built, which decayed over time.

The climb to the castle ruins is very narrow and very steep and so is the descent, but for my effort I once again satisfied my curiosity 🤣😂 and found that the ruins are still there

Ruins of an island castle south of the Limmat, founded in the 11th century and remodeled several times up until the 14th century. Like Glanzenberg Castle on the other bank of the river, Schönenwerd was also destroyed by the Zurichers. The preserved foundations of the residential tower, palace, rampart and farm buildings are visible.

Steep ascent with two tight switchbacks up, difficult to change down with the rear wheel, but no problem. The castle was divided in two. On the southern crest of the hill, the highest point, there was a round tower, probably a keep next to a square palace. Today there is not much left to see.

Castle ruins of a two-part castle. A round tower and a square house stood on the southern crest of the hill. A farm building stood on the north crest of the hill. In 1936 the ruins were excavated. The castle was probably built at the end of the 12th century and fell victim to a fire in the mid-13th century. The castle and the farm building were abandoned and fell into disrepair. The few remains lie high above the Limmat valley in the middle of the forest on the hilltops. They are under regional cultural monument protection. The path to the ruins is relatively steep and therefore caution is advised, especially after rainy days (danger of slipping).
