The castle originated from an upper farm of the St. Pantaleon Monastery in Cologne, first documented in 1085. Its administrator was the von Eickel family, first documented in 1225. By 1613, Eickel Castle was said to have become a quarry for the villagers. In 1875/76, during the straightening of the Königstraße, the former moat was filled in, the last visible trace of Haus Eickel, and the last residential building there was demolished. You can tell from the foundation walls how stable the house must have been. A circular path has been laid out around these foundation walls and is lined with beautiful fruit trees. Beautifully hidden, but worth a detour.

The moated castle was first mentioned in a document in 1243, still as a castle, about 100 years before its builders, the noble family of Strünkedes. Their name goes back to the word Strunk for cleared tree remains. The family lived here until the end of the 18th century. Since 1938 the castle has been used for the culture and city history collections of the Emschertal Museum.
